Building a Culture of Appreciation at Stampli

Stampli Culture of Appreciation Blog Post

New jobs can be really intimidating. You spend the majority of your first few days and weeks getting to know everyone’s name (made slightly easier by Zoom meetings). You start to learn the culture and settle into a rhythm with your role. You begin to see what it’s like to work with the team and with your co-workers.

Onboarding with Stampli isn’t any different in that regard.

But, as one recent hire shared after her first week, there is something immediately unique about the Stampli experience: “Something that stood out to me from my very first day was how free flowing appreciation was throughout the entire organization. It was everywhere and best of all, it was intentional.”

Here at Stampli, praise and recognition are thrown around like confetti. Appreciation slips into every nook and cranny of our interactions. But didn’t come about by accident. Just like so many parts of culture, even simple acts take effort and care.

How We’ve Built a Culture of Appreciation at Stampli

People have always been at the core of what we do at Stampli, and we wanted that to be felt by everyone – from our customers to individual team members. Baking appreciation into our culture at Stampli allows us to drive home our goal of delivering a high-touch, personal experience for every team member, prospect, and customer that comes into contact with us.

How we show appreciation isn’t always a grand gesture (though sometimes it is!). For the most part it’s reliably saying “Thank you!” to a teammate, or taking care to share how what they did helped you. Small as that might seem, when you have enough small moments like that it really starts to add up into something noticeable.

Here are just a few of the everyday ways we show appreciation at Stampli:

  • Simple Slack Kudos. We live in Slack nowadays (who doesn’t?!) and it’s the perfect place to give someone a 1×1 “Thanks!” or a more public message of appreciation in a group channel.
  • Weekly Meeting Shoutouts. Every Friday, the US Stampli team meets to go over highlights from the week. One part of this meeting is devoted to the “Stampli Shoutout” – basically a moment of recognition for someone who’s been extra helpful during the week.
  • Regular Ol’ Respect. This might feel overly simplistic, but when you respect those around you, you’re inherently showing that you appreciate their time and expertise. All our Stampli interactions are rooted in respect which is another subtle, but ongoing way you’ll also see appreciation in our culture.

Of course, punctuated by all of these “smaller” moments of appreciation are larger shows of recognition. These are reserved as special ways to highlight people who have really gone above and beyond. One example is our quarterly Excellence Award, given to a Stampli employee who is a shining example of the Stampli spirit.

Excellence Awards are submission-driven, meaning any Stampli employee can voluntarily put forth a nomination for who they think should be acknowledged for their hard work. Once a winner is selected, that person is honored during one of Stampli’s company-wide meetings (where teams from Mountain View, Nashville, and Tel Aviv tune in). Beyond public kudos, the Excellence Award winner also receives $5k (post-tax) as a show of gratitude. The Excellence Award is one of our favorite ways to give someone an extra big “Thank you!” and we’re excited for it to be a long-standing tradition.

Why Appreciation Matters to Us So Much

Stampli would be nothing without our team. Each person who joins helps us get closer to our goals in some way, shape or form. We always want to highlight every contributors unique skills, perspectives, and talents and showcase that what they’re doing helps us achieve company-wide goals. But more importantly, we also want to always remember that we’re all human. We spend so much of our time at work. So shouldn’t the workplace be a supportive and appreciative place to go each day?

At the end of the day, as H. Jackson Brown says: “A person’s greatest emotional need is to be appreciated.” We hope to give our employees that type of support during their working days. And so far, it’s been an incredible way to stay connected and motivated as a team, and on our own.
