Troubleshooting Tips When Your Application Is Slow

With so many people WFH and children learning from home these days, your internet connection may very well be the MVP – or even the Unsung Hero – as it works around the clock to support everyone’s daily wireless needs. As such, there are bound to be occasional interruptions to service or slowness, especially during surges of activity.

If you are experiencing longer than usual response times when using an application, here are some suggestions on diagnosing and resolving the issue.

Check Your Internet Connection

  • Does your Internet Service Provider have a service interruption impacting your connection speed? Check with your provider or run an Internet speed test to see if your computer has a slow connection.
  • If your computer is close to the WiFi Router and your connection is slow, you can prioritize which devices on your network get the most bandwidth. This is done by accessing your router settings and adding your computer as a device under the Network Prioritization menu.
  • While not always viable, the best option for a stable and strong connection is to use a cable to hardwire your computer to your router when they are both in the same room.
  • If your computer is far away from the router, investing in WiFi Extenders or a Mesh Network is another option to ensure there is a strong connection.

Check Your Computer

  • Try renewing your DHCP lease under “network settings” and if that doesn’t work, try the following tip;
  • Close your applications and restart your computer, especially if it has been a while since you last shut down your computer.

Check Your Browser

  • Try using another browser.
  • Open a browser window in “incognito-mode” and log into your application. If there are no performance problems in this mode, clear the browser cache and restart the browser. Follow instructions for clearing the cache for your specific browser.
  • Log back into your application.

Check Your Application

  • Are other sites loading normally? Is this happening to others in your company using the application as well? If so, the application itself may have an issue.
  • Identify the activity or page that is slower than normal. Is it throughout the system or is it just in a specific area? Have that information ready.
  • Have that information handy and contact the support team of your application for assistance.
