BILL (Bill.com) reviews: What do real users think?

BILL is a comprehensive accounting automation platform for freelancers and small and medium-sized businesses. Its mission is to simplify financial processes for business owners.

Formerly known as Bill.com, BILL has proven to be a popular financial operations tool for companies looking to streamline their accounting process and manage their finances. It promises to be a simple way for entrepreneurs and businesses to automate core accounting functions, allowing them to channel their resources to operations, sales, and marketing. But what do customers really think of BILL?

BILL automates accounts receivable, accounts payable, electronic payment processing and billing, credit cards, and expense management to help businesses manage their cash inflows and outflows more efficiently.

In this article, we look at user reviews and industry ratings to see what customers like and dislike about BILL. We’ll summarize the platform’s strengths and weaknesses to help you decide if it’s a good fit for your business or if you should consider an alternative accounting software provider.

BILL user reviews: Pros

Here are the top BILL strengths identified in positive reviews.

Scalability

Small and midsize businesses liked BILL’s accounts receivable features. One reviewer commented that BILL helped them “streamline our payments thru one service – making accounts receivable easier for both customers and the businesses.” Another BILL customer said they liked BILL’s ability to handle recurring customer payments, saying, “One of the most useful tools is the automated ACH transactions that can be used for monthly service agreements with customers.”

However, some customers reported glitches with BILL’s AP/AR services. For example, one reviewer complained that the service “Frequently goes out of sync,” and that the “receivable control [was] not as integrated as payables.”

Ease of use

Customers mentioned BILL was easy to set up and implement, provided good training for employees, and helped simplify complex accounting processes. One reviewer added they liked the user experience, saying “I am using BILL on a day-to-day basis, and the user interface is so simple.”

However, reviewers on Trustradius were highly critical of BILL’s ease of use, rating it only one out of 10 and leaving comments like “I feel like I am about to quit before I do an hour of work.”

Centralized payment management

Multiple reviewers said they appreciate BILL’s centralized vendor payment process, calling it a “wonderful application to process the bills and easy to to make the payment to vendors.” Users highlighted how features like unlimited online document storage and linking documents to transactions make it easier to track and control financial records and perform audits.

BILL user reviews: Cons

Here are the top BILL weaknesses identified in customer reviews.

Unresponsive customer service

Multiple users across all review sites reported dissatisfaction with BILL’s customer support. One customer described the support team as showing “Complete disregard for their users,” and complained that “They will change their software and processes at will which requires you to re-do your processes so the software continues to work.”

Common user complaints about BILL’s customer service included:

  • Long support response times: Customers complained it was difficult to contact BILL customer support and the support team took too long to resolve issues. As one user reported, support delays could go into weeks: “Very frustrated after 2 hours and 2 diff chat sessions and now have to wait till next week to talk to someone.”
  • Poor communication: Multiple users expressed frustration that BILL’s customer support was unresponsive. Some didn’t pull any punches, like this disgruntled Capterra reviewer, who said, “Bill.com was been the worst payment provider our business has ever worked with. The customer went on to complain about the poor quality of customer support communications, saying, “The customer service email disregards everything that you say, they do not allow you to call in with any questions or concerns.”
  • Problems not resolved: Many customers reported that BILL customer support took a long time to resolve their issues or didn’t solve the problem at all. Several users said escalating or threatening to move their business elsewhere didn’t help speed resolution. In fact, as one incredulous customer said after giving BILL two months to fix their issues, “it only got worse.”

Challenges integrating BILL with ERPs and accounting software

Some users reported challenges integrating BILL with ERPs and accounting software. “Some of my colleagues were facing constant issues while integrating large amounts of data through other AP software,” complained one G2 reviewer, echoing other customers who experienced chronic issues with BILL’s integrated platform.

  • Sync errors: Several customers reported difficulty getting BILL to sync with platforms like QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, and NetSuite. One user struggling with chronic sync errors as they tried to integrate BILL and QuickBooks called it a “horrible experience” where “Sync issues have messed up our historical client data in QuickBooks.”
  • Difficult implementations: Several customers complained that BILL’s onboarding process was difficult and they were having problems with ongoing functionality. One customer complained about invoice and payment processing challenges like “difficulties in uploading the invoices as bulk,” and that “It takes a long time to send payment reminders to customers,” and “International payments take a long time to proceed.”
The same customer also mentioned challenges with BILL integrations, saying they “Face difficulty in integrating this with other software.”
  • Poor customer support for ERP integrations: Many users reported poor customer support with software and ERP integrations. A reviewer who was trying to who get BILL to integrate with Dynamics Business Central complained that “getting in touch with bill.com (they advertise the support of this migration) has been nearly impossible.” They went on to say that even after escalating the issue 5 or more times over 2 months, they were not able to complete the migration.

International payments

Several users complained about the poor quality of BILL’s international payment services. The negative reviews mention:

  • Delayed payments: Customers complained that it could take a long time to send international payments via BILL. One reviewer complained about BILL’s “Extremely slow payment processing times,” and that payment delays were “sometimes more than a week for international vendors.  They went on to say that delays and a lack of visibility into the status of international payments were preventing them from making timely payments to their suppliers.
  • High currency exchange rates and fees: One customer speculated that BILL’s foreign currency exchange product was effectively “a hidden fee through non-market exchange rate” that if you used it to pay international vendors “costs you hundreds on more significant international payment amounts.” Customers also complained about high fees for international wire transfers.
  • No foreign payments: Several customers complained that BILL didn’t let them pay vendors from their foreign subsidiaries. As one user mentioned, BILL’s policy left customers with little choice but to “look for a alternative for NON US vendor payments,” forcing customers to use multiple payment platforms.

The bottom line

As one of the largest players in accounting automation, BILL provides a comprehensive service that helps businesses streamline their accounts receivable and payable functions. However, negative user reviews suggest BILL may not be ideal for businesses requiring responsive customer support, seamless integration with ERPs and accounting software, or low-cost international payment processing.
